Infrastructure of feeling

Infrastructure of feeling explores how our experience of culture today is shaped by devices and systems which try to facilitate the way we sense, and make sense of, the world around us.

The project revolves around software programmed to listen to recorded music and analyse the sound for emotional content. The system then expresses its mood through colour and translates its feelings into ideas by searching for books which correspond to its emotional state.

The music that stimulates the system is a series of six continuously playing recordings of Norwegian music covering Medieval, Folk, Classical, Avant-Garde, Pop and Doom Metal. Based on what it feels, the system has been programmed and given a budget to create a library of books on the theme of infrastructure that will accumulate over the exhibition period.

Each day the system will select a number of books to buy that will be delivered and displayed in the space. Visitors are invited to sit, read and listen while the system works out what it feels and thinks about infrastructure.

Infrastructure of feeling is a freethought project and is on display from 1 September to 1 October at the 2016 Bergen Assembly in Norway
